Additional Information on In-depth Interviews
Due to the one-on-one nature of in-depth interviews, the respondent often feels more comfortable sharing details about the research topic then they might in a group setting. The rapport created by the researcher helps respondents to open up and describe their experiences and preferences.

IDI's are a preferred approach when the participant will be asked to discuss sensitive issues. Conducting in-depth interviews on an individual bases also eliminates the possibility that other people will influence what the respondent has to say.

IDIs can be a great way to gain insight into people's thoughts and impressions. However, as with all forms of qualitative research, it is important to remember that the findings should not be considered representative of the entire research population.

IDI's can also be conducted over the Internet using tools like Skype or other web conferencing services.
