Explain why the reader cares: Clients are busy and like to get straight to the point. Many prefer to know the story of the data, not every little fact. For these reasons, we start our research report with a Summary of Findings section. This section allows us to grab the reader’s attention right away and show them how this report is highly relevant to their business questions.
Highlight the conclusions: Once the client knows an overview of the research results by reading the Summary of Findings section, we delve deeper into the Conclusions and Recommendations. In this section we distill recommendations for our client to take action on and support each one with conclusions directly from the study. This allows our clients to make an informed decision on whether or not to follow each recommendation, and the priority for implementation.
Show how data supports the story: If you make a bold statement, back it up with the facts. You can write the data in the text or pair visualized data (tables, charts, infographics) with the statement. When reading our research report, the reader will immediately know why we chose each piece of information to share with them. The last part of our report is the Detailed Findings section that supports the story. This is a question-by-question analysis of the entire study supports the story written in the Summary of Findings section.
